Pray the Hours
Do the Works

“Oh God, come to my assistance,
Lord, make haste to help me”

We are a newly formed lay apostolate, called “Lord Make Haste” promoting the prayer of the Liturgy of the Hours and engagement with the Corporal Works of Mercy. We are a Minnesota nonprofit.

A lay apostolate is a christian mission led by lay people who use their gifts and talents to spread the Gospel and serve others. This means that while we seek to act in congruence with the Roman Catholic Church, we are not sanctioned or supervised by a particular Bishop or Diocese.

The Liturgy of the Hours is the official prayer of the church and has ancient roots; Jesus himself prayed a form of the Liturgy of the Hours. Today, many people are obligated to pray the Liturgy of the Hours in some form including the Pope, Bishops, Priests, Deacons and professed religious (like monks and nuns). Many lay people across the world pray the Liturgy of the Hours and our mission is to support that. This prayer begins with a pleading for God to come to our assistance and make haste to help us.

The Works of Mercy, particularly the Corporal Works of Mercy, come from Matthew 25:31-46 where Jesus prescribes specific acts of kindness towards those in need as serving Him directly. There are seven:

  • Feed the hungry
  • Give drink to the thirsty
  • Shelter the homeless
  • Visit the sick
  • Visit the prisoners
  • Bury the dead
  • Give alms to the poor

As we pray for the Lord to make haste to help us, we realize that Christ called us to be his very hands of mercy in this world here and now. That is, we ought to pray for the Lord to help us – and then we are called to get up and be that very help our neighbors need.

This apostolate seeks to promote both of these acts for the lay faithful. Specifically, we will seek to compile resources to teach you to pray the Liturgy of the Hours regularly and to connect you with people and organizations that provide opportunities for you to engage in the Corporal Works of Mercy.

This website is, of course, under construction and just getting off the ground. More to come!

For anybody wondering, we are a corporation filed in the State of Minnesota. Our application with the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c) Non-Profit is pending approval.
